Iran's military claims to have hit a US naval base in Bahrain, as the country executed missile attacks across the region in retaliation for a large-scale and continuing assault against it by the US and Israel.

Large columns of dark smoke were observed billowing from an area near the command center of the American Fifth Fleet in Bahrain's capital, Manama. The scope of any impact is not yet known and the United States has remained silent.

Missile Defenses Activated

Elsewhere across the region, the UAE, Qatar and the State of Kuwait - each hosting US military bases - reported they have engaged and destroyed missiles in their airspace.

In the Qatari capital, Qatar's defence ministry stated it had intercepted a number of projectiles seemingly aimed at the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest American base in the region.

Iran's Declared Retaliation

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated it was targeting American facilities and interests as part of operation "Truthful Promise 4", in retaliation for the attack on the Islamic Republic launched by the US and Israel on Saturday.

That US-Israeli operation - initiated at around 06:15 GMT - has so far struck areas associated with the Iranian leadership, with President Trump encouraging the Iranian people to rise up against the leadership.

Wider Impacts

In Israel, air raid sirens sounded nationwide after the Israel Defense Forces said it had detected an incoming Iranian missile barrage.

The defence ministry of the United Arab Emirates said in a statement that the country has been subjected to a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".

"Emirati air defenses dealt with the missiles with notable success and successfully intercepted a several projectiles," the statement continued.

It said debris fell on a populated district in the capital, causing some structural damage and the death of one civilian.

The US Air Force operates from Al Dhafra Air Base, to the south of Abu Dhabi, along with the UAE Air Force.
