“That was regrettable. That was essentially an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
League Context for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous examples involve:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
